Trip Itinerary
Departure from different cities
Arrival at Kathmandu airport (generally in the afternoon) already marks our entry into another world… Customs formalities, luggage collection, and welcome by your local guide. The transfer across the city to your hotel offers a first glimpse of Nepal’s colorful and vibrant capital. Buses, trucks, bicycles, and sacred cows cross paths in a lively and friendly chaos. Depending on your arrival time, visit of the surroundings or simply check-in and rest at the hotel before dinner. In case of early morning arrival, lunch will be included in the program.
Accommodation: lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Transfer: 6–7 h by bus. We leave Kathmandu by road heading west, then follow the wide Trisuli Valley north to reach the town of the same name. On clear days, the panorama is superb: on our left, Annapurna II, Manaslu, and ahead, the Ganesh Himal range. Then we climb winding roads to Shyabru Bensi with a stop at Kalikhastan, the entry point to Langtang National Park.
Elevation gain: 1184 m. Elevation loss: 184 m. 6–7 h of trekking. Accommodation: lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Trekking begins. We cross the village of Shyabru, then terraced fields and dense forests of oak, alder, and bamboo. We cross the Langtang Khola river on a large suspension bridge. Some ups and downs in landslide areas make the day varied, despite the few visible settlements. We cross the turbulent Langtang Khola again before a steep climb to Rimche (2250 m). The descent towards Changtang, called “Lama Hotel” after the first lodge built there, is gentle.
Elevation gain: 1035 m. Elevation loss: 100 m. 5–6 h of trekking. Accommodation: lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner. We gradually climb through the forest, with occasional openings offering views of the clear blue river below. At a clearing, Langtang Lirung (7246 m) appears majestically. The trail crosses a suspension bridge, then ascends through pastures with yaks to Ghora Tabela, a pastoral village mainly inhabited by Tibetans. The valley gradually widens as we progress. We pass several traditional Tamang houses and the first mani walls (prayer walls). Arrival at Langtang, a village recognizable by its Tibetan-style flat-roofed houses, is imminent.
Elevation gain: 470 m. 3 h of trekking. Accommodation: lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner. The trail winds through the largest village in the valley, reaching a ridge dominated by a large square chorten and long prayer wall. From there, a small moraine provides a view of Kyanjin. Then a short descent leads to the lodges and the local cheese factory. In the afternoon, there is an optional hike to Kyanjin Ri (4773 m) for a remarkable viewpoint: Langtang Lirung (7227 m), Yala Peak (5050 m), Langshisha Ri (6560 m), Urkeinmang Himal (6143 m), among many others. If you prefer, you can explore the wide Langtang valley, which gently rises towards the summer yak pastures.
Elevation gain: 1100 m. Elevation loss: 1100 m. 8 h of trekking. Accommodation: lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Optional day to either explore the upper Langtang valley or climb Tsergo Ri. From the summit, the panoramic view is stunning: Langtang Lirung (7246 m), Naya Kanga (5846 m), Dorje Lakpa (6966 m), Langshisa Ri (6427 m), Ganchenpo (6378 m), and in the distance, Shishapangma (8013 m). The round trip is a rewarding day of effort. Terrain is not technically difficult, though the final section over large boulders is challenging.
Elevation gain: 90 m. Elevation loss: 1490 m. 6–7 h of trekking. Accommodation: lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Descent follows the same trail as the ascent.
